A draw bridge, a large park featuring outdoor exhibitions and a keep from the Middle Ages in the background, a prestigious collection... the Langeais castle has excellent potential for an interesting tour during a holiday in pristine north-western Touraine.

Watersports recreation in the Langeais countryside

Langeais is located on the banks of the Loire: as is often the case in Touraine, spending time contemplating the river is an essential activity. Consider an outing on the Endremage company’s traditional boats, or on a canoe with the Loire Vélo Nature company. You could also take a bicycle ride along the banks (the Loire à Vélo cycling route passes here).

Water is an ever-present theme at this beautiful destination featuring three bodies of water where swimming is possible: the Val-Joyeux lake (in Château-la-Vallière), the La Plaine lakes (in Hommes) and the Capitaine recreation park (in Bourgueil). Children will be delighted to go for a swim during the hot summer months, after a day spent enjoying the specially designed family tours at the Langeais and Gizeux castles.

Immerse yourself in nature

Along with the traditional hiking trails, there are many bicycle trails providing excellent opportunities for stunning nature excursions in the forests, moors and even the Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil vineyards (where visitors can also check out several Val de Loire "caves touristiques" wine cellars). Bicycles can be hired in Langeais and in Bréhémont. If you’d rather be on horseback than on wheels, you might be interested in the O'Poney farm (Langeais) where visitors can go horseback riding in the forest, in addition to taking beginner’s introduction courses.

What to do in the Langeais area

Because a trip to France wouldn’t be complete without an opportunity to appreciate the gastronomy, visitors shouldn’t miss the Sunday morning Langeais market. Here is a short list of restaurants to check out as well: in Courcelles-de-Touraine, the Golf des 7 Tours restaurant, in Langeais, le Coin des Halles and in Bourgueil, le café de la Promenade.

As for attractions, after visiting the Langeais castle, you will certainly want to see more of them. And that’s a good thing because in Touraine, castles are in good supply! Here is a short list of castles, from north to south: Marcilly-sur-Maulne, Vaujours, Champchevrier, Gizeux, Cinq-Mars, Luynes, and of course Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau, l’Islette and Ussé which are nearby. Also keep in mind that the Semblançay castle puts on sound and light shows all throughout the summer.
