Officially one of the most beautiful villages in France (Les plus beaux villages de France), Candes-Saint-Martin is picture perfect: on the north bank of the Loire River, the village’s white tuffeau stone lies between the bright blue sky and deep blue Loire. Add sandy banks and gabare boats and you’ve got the perfect photo!

Candes-Saint-Martin, an ancient port

The village lies where the Loire and Vienne meetand naturally became a river port. The Delaporte brothers keep history alive with Loire Valley tours on their traditional gabare boats, the Amarante and Belle Adèle. Whether you choose a 45 minute ride, a twilight trip (90 minutes) or a romantic overnight stay in the middle of the Loire Valley, this is an experience you’ll never forget!

Saint Martin’s home village

The man who cut his cape in two to share it with a beggar is none other than Martin of Tours (Saint Martin). The piece of cape he kept then became an object of worship and is the origin of the word “chapel”, the place where people came to see the famous cape!

Many villages may bear his name but it was here in Candes-Saint-Martin that the saint died. The beautiful Saint-Martin collegiate church where his house once stood.

This is where the legend of “Saint Martin’s summer” was born. Legend has it that the flowers bloom along the Loire in November to accompany Martin of Tours’ remains which were transported by boat to the basilica in Tours.
