The Château de Chenonceau (prior booking required for the visit) is nicknamed the "Ladies' Château". It is one of the most majestic of the Loire châteaux. Dear to Diane de Poitiers and the Queen Catherine de Medici, it wonderfully embodies the elegance of the 16th century Renaissance châteaux built in the Loire valley.
The château's arches gracefully bestride the River Cher, supporting a double gallery. Visitors listen to iPods recounting precious episodes from French history, as they visit the richly furnished rooms (the kitchen, the bedrooms of Louise de Lorraine and Gabrielle d'Estrées, Henry IV's mistress, the Medici Gallery, the Francis I room, the Five Queens room, etc.). In the estate park, they are enchanted by the Diane and Catherine Gardens, the Russell Page Garden and the flower kitchen garden. The Château de Chenonceau is the only château in France with a flower workshop. Here, Jean-François Boucher and his team produce beautiful bouquets for each room. Everyone agrees that they alone are worth a visit!
A little further on, the cellar of the domes is perfect for tasting Touraine-Chenonceaux AOC wines, while the carriage gallery houses a small museum of horse-drawn vehicles. Note also the presence of the castle's self-service restaurant, in the splendid Bâtiment des Dômes, with a large shaded terrace (hot dishes, raw vegetable buffet, desserts).
Several thematic visits and events are offered throughout the year: wine tours, summer night walks, botanical tours...
With its exceptional architecture, the Château de Chenonceau is a major landmark in Touraine and one of the most visited sites in France. Thanks to positive reviews, it also attracts visitors from all over the world to the small village of Chenonceaux, which is written with an "x" at the end. A guided tour of the Château de Chenonceau is available in 11 languages from the App Store.
At home, before your visit, you can stroll through the Château de Chenonceau gardens using Google Street View.
